The Massachusetts hockey team defeated Maine 5-2 Saturday night at the Mullins Center. With the win, the Minutemen (11-17-2, 8-14-1 Hockey East Association) are back in eighth place and one point ahead of the Black Bears (9-17-6, 5-12-6 for the final spot in the Hockey East Playoffs.

LaRue puts UMass ahead in third: Fourth-line forward Zack LaRue put the Minutemen back on top with a goal in the third period, when he put home a rebound that Maine goalie Martin Ouellette couldn’t cover up. Conor Sheary added on an insurance goal later in the third. Kevin Czepiel added an empty-net goal in the final minute of the game to wrap up the two points.

UMass goes up early: With 14:09 remaining in the first period, Adam Phillips put UMass up 1-0 when he put home a rebound off of a shot by Rocco Carzo. Then Branden Gracel put the Minutemen up 2-0 at the time when he shot a rocket that beat Ouellette over his glove at the 7:47 mark in the frame.

Maine responds in second: The Black Bears dominated the second period with a pair of goals to tie the game up at 2-2. Both goals came on wrist shots that beat UMass goalie Steve Mastalerz. Jake Rutt scored the first one on a power play goal. Then Bill Norman tied the game later in the frame.

Up Next: UMass will be back in action next weekend when it travels to No. 5 New Hampshire for a pair of road games. Friday’s puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.

2nd Intermission Report: UMass 2, Maine 2

The Massachusetts hockey team and Maine are all knotted up 2-2 after two periods of play at the Mullins Center.

Maine scores a pair: The Black Bears dominated the second period with a pair of goals to tie the game up at 2-2. Both goals came on wrist shots that beat UMass goalie Steve Mastalerz. Jake Rutt scored the first one on a power play goal. Then Bill Norman tied the game later in the frame.

Stats: Maine outshot the Minutemen 10-8 during the second. UMass committed three penalties and the Black Bears will begin the third period on the man up advantage. Both Black Bears’ goalie Martin Ouellette and Mastalerz made eight saves. Devin Shore was credited with the assist on Rutt’s goal and Andre Cerretani got the helper on Norman’s.

First Intermission Report: UMass 2, Maine 0

The Massachusetts hockey team leads Maine 2-0 after one period of action at the Mullins Center.

Phillips gets things started: The Minutemen were shut out by Martin Ouellette of the Black Bears last night, but it didn’t take long for them to score Saturday. With 14:09 remaining in the first period, Adam Phillips put UMass up 1-0 when he put home a rebound off of a shot by Rocco Carzo.

Gracel snipe: The Minutemen got an insurance goal from Branden Gracel when he shot a rocket that beat Ouellette over his glove at the 7:47 mark in the frame.

Stats: Ouellette made seven saves and Steve Mastalerz made six. UMass outshot Maine 9-6. Joel Hanley and Conor Sheary assisted Gracel’s goal. Steven Guzzo was credited with a secondary assist on Phillips’ goal. No penalties for either team yet.

The Massachusetts hockey team lost its fifth-straight game Friday night when it fell to Maine 2-0 at the Mullins Center in front of 4,703 fans.

-Ouellette puts on a show: Martin Ouellette put on a show in net for the Black Bears Friday night. He made a total of 30 saves including one when he robbed K.J. Tiefenwerth in the second period. Tiefenwerth had a wide-open net to score on but Ouellette came out of nowhere to make a diving glove save.

-Maine scores two: The Black Bears had the offense working in the second period. Ben Hutton and Mark Anthoine each scored goals for Maine in the frame. Hutton broke a scoreless tie with a power play goal at the 14:14 mark. Then Anthoine padded onto the Black Bears’ lead when he scored with 1:09 remaining in the period.

-Boyle pulled: Despite making 22 saves during the first 38:43 minutes of the game, UMass starting goalie, Kevin Boyle, was pulled in favor of Steve Mastalerz near the end of the second frame. Mastalerz didn’t allow a goal the rest of the way and made eight saves.

-Up next: The Minutemen will host Maine at 7 p.m. Saturday night. 

2nd intermission thoughts: Maine 2, UMass 0

After an uneventful first period, Maine came out strong in the second period and now holds a 2-0 lead over the Massachusetts hockey team.

-Ouellette puts on a show: Martin Ouellette put on a show in net for the Black Bears during the second period. Most notably he robbed K.J. Tiefenwerth with a diving glove save of what looked to be a sure goal. Ouellette has 20 saves so far tonight.

-Maine scores two: The Black Bears had the offense working in the second period too. Ben Hutton scored the first goal on a power play and then Mark Anthoine made it 2-0 when he scored with 1:09 remaining.

-Boyle pulled: Despite making 22 saves during the first 38:43 minutes of the game, UMass starting goalie, Kevin Boyle, was pulled in favor of Steve Mastalerz near the end of the second frame.

Rapid reaction: UMass 2, Maine 2

The Massachusetts hockey team clawed its way back from a two-goal deficit Friday night in front of 4,231 fans at Alfond Arena, to earn a 2-2 draw with Maine (2-9-1, 1-5-1 Hockey East Association).

Conor Allen tied the game up for the Minutemen (3-4-1, 2-4-1 HEA) with only one minute and eight seconds left in regulation. Rocco Carzo and Conor Sheary were each credited with an assist on the goal.

After the goal, neither team was able to score again and the game ended in a tie. UMass did get a golden opportunity in the overtime period when Jake Rutt was sent to the penalty box for slashing with 1:08 remaining, but the Minutemen were unable to convert.

UMass’ first goal came courtesy of Steven Guzzo on a power play at the 14:54 mark in the second period. Troy Power and Colin Shea each earned an assist on the goal.

The Black Bears built their initial 2-0 lead in the first period with a pair of goals.

Mark Nemec scored the first goal at the 7:39 mark and Devin Shore was credited with an assist. Rutt scored Maine’s second goal on a power play at the 9:21 mark. Ben Hutton and Kyle Beattle were each credited with an assist on the goal.

After a shaky start in which he allowed two early goals, Minutemen goalie Kevin Boyle settled down and didn’t allow another goal from there. He made 27 saves in 64:57 minutes of ice time.

His counterpart in goal, Martin Ouellette, made 30 saves on 32 shots for Maine.

Next on the schedule for UMass is a home date with UMass-Lowell Sunday at 7 p.m. Then the Minutemen will host Vermont at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
